What Is Music Staff Paper?
Music staff paper - also called manuscript paper or music score paper - is paper designed for writing musical notation. Each set of five parallel lines is called a staff. Notes are placed on and between the lines to indicate pitch. A page commonly contains 8 to 14 staves, depending on spacing and paper size.
Standard Staff Paper (5-Line Staff)
The common five-line format uses evenly spaced horizontal lines. The distance between the first and last line of each staff is called the staff height. It is usually between 7 mm and 10 mm. A taller staff is easier to write in but fits fewer staves per page.
- 7 mm staff height - Compact. Fits about 14 staves on A4. Good for sketching ideas quickly.
- 8.5 mm staff height - A common balance. Fits 10–12 staves. Works for general composition.
- 10 mm staff height - Large. Fits about 8 staves. Helpful for beginners or large handwritten parts.
- 12 mm+ - Extra large. Useful for teaching materials, choral parts, or lead sheets.
For a multi-instrument score, tighter staff spacing helps keep page turns manageable. For single-instrument lead sheets, a larger staff is often more readable.
Guitar Tablature Paper
Guitar tablature (tab) uses six horizontal lines to represent the six strings of a guitar. Numbers on the lines indicate frets, so it is quick to write and easy to read without formal music theory. Tab notation does not show rhythm or dynamics as precisely as standard staff notation.
PaperMe's guitar tab template offers six-line tab staves with optional space for chord diagrams above each system. You can adjust the string spacing to suit your handwriting.
Ukulele Tab Paper
Ukulele tab paper uses four lines for the four strings, commonly tuned G–C–E–A. Because there are fewer strings, the staves are more compact. Many ukulele arrangements combine tab with chord diagrams on the same sheet.

How Many Staves Do You Need Per Page?
The right number depends on the kind of music you are writing.
- Solo melody or lead sheet - 10–12 staves on A4. Leaves room for lyrics below each staff.
- Piano score (grand staff) - Staves come in pairs; about 5–6 grand staves per page.
- Full band arrangement - Use A3 paper with 8–10 staves, or stack instrument parts vertically.
- Quick composition sketches - Fewer, larger staves can make writing and erasing easier.
Printing Music Paper for Performers
If you are printing parts for performers, paper quality matters. Music sheets are marked with pencil, folded, placed on stands, and sometimes handled roughly. At least 90 gsm paper is a practical choice. For permanent archives or professional publications, 100 gsm uncoated paper provides a clean, non-reflective surface that reads well under stage lighting.
When printing, select the same paper size as the document and choose 100% or Actual Size in the print dialog so the staves keep their intended dimensions.
Using PaperMe for Custom Staff Paper
With PaperMe, you can generate a page with exactly the staff height, spacing, line weight, line color, paper size, and page count you need. For example, you can create seven staves on US Letter with a subtle gray line at 0.4 pt weight in less than a minute.
