College Rule (8 mm): The Universal Standard
College rule is the most widely used line spacing worldwide: 8 mm between lines, fitting about 32 lines on a standard A4 sheet. It works for the majority of adult handwriting sizes and is the default in most school notebooks, legal pads, and office notepads. If you only print one style, this is it.

Print at 100% scale (Actual Size). Never use Fit to Page. This guarantees the 8 mm spacing is exact on paper.
Narrow Rule (7 mm): More Lines Per Page
Narrow rule squeezes lines 1 mm closer together, giving you about 36 lines per A4 page instead of 32. The difference feels small but adds up when taking dense lecture notes or copying long passages. Most adults with compact handwriting find narrow rule more efficient than college rule.

- Best for: University students, dense note-taking, reporters, journaling.
- Line count: ~36 lines per A4 page.
- Avoid if: Your handwriting is large or you like generous whitespace between lines.
Wide Rule (10 mm): Space for Every Letter
Wide rule gives the most breathing room between lines. Children learning to write, adults with large handwriting, and anyone who wants a relaxed journaling experience all benefit from 10 mm spacing. It also works well for rough drafts and brainstorming where you want space to add notes between lines.

- Best for: Primary school students, large handwriting, casual journaling, first drafts.
- Line count: ~26 lines per A4 page.
- Avoid if: You are taking dense notes or have small handwriting.
Extra Narrow Rule (6 mm): Maximum Lines
At 6 mm spacing, a single A4 sheet holds around 43 lines, nearly a full page of a pocket notebook. This style suits people with very small, neat handwriting or anyone who wants to fit the maximum amount of information on a single sheet. It requires a fine-tip pen to keep letters clear.

Use a 0.3–0.5 mm fineliner or mechanical pencil with 6 mm rule. Thick ballpoints will make letters look crowded.
Black Lines: High Contrast for Dark Paper or Scanning
Standard blue lines are light enough not to distract the eye, but they can be hard to see on some printer outputs or disappear entirely when scanning. Black lined paper gives maximum contrast, ideal when you need the lines visible in photos or scans, or when printing on colored paper stock.

Green Lines: Easier on the Eyes
Green ruling is used in traditional account ledgers and data entry sheets because green is less fatiguing to the eye during long reading or writing sessions than black or blue. Many people also find it aesthetically pleasing for journaling and personal notebooks.

Pink Lined Paper: Soft and Stylish
Pink lined paper with a warm white background is popular for personal stationery, planners, and creative journaling. The soft pink lines are subtle enough not to compete with your writing, while the warm background gives a more personal feel than stark white.

Letter Size (8.5 x 11 in): For US Printers
If you are in the United States, Canada, or Mexico, your printer tray is likely loaded with Letter-size paper (8.5 × 11 inches). Using an A4 template on a Letter printer causes the page to be cut or scaled incorrectly. This template is sized precisely for Letter paper at 100% scale.

US users: always select Letter paper in your printer dialog and set scale to 100%. Do not use A4 templates on Letter printers.
A5 Size: Half-Sheet for Compact Notebooks
A5 paper (148 × 210 mm) is half the size of A4 and fits in most compact planners, pocket notebooks, and binders. Many people print A5 sheets and fold them into homemade notebooks. This template prints two A5 pages per A4 sheet when you use your printer's booklet or 2-up setting.

Red Margin: Classic Notebook Style
The red vertical margin line on the left, a feature of classic composition books and legal pads, separates the writing area from a narrow margin for notes, corrections, and annotations. This template combines college rule (8 mm) with a single red margin line positioned 20 mm from the left edge, matching the standard legal pad layout.
